The most successful music producer of all time, as defined by the sheer quantity of Number One Billboard hits, the man who produced the likes of the Beatles, Jeff Beck, Sting, and Elton John, at the end of a long and eventful career, this man of immense accomplishment chose to focus much of his autobio-documentary on living with hearing loss, which speaks to its profound impact on daily life.
Here’s some of what he had to say:
“Every time you talk to someone, especially at a cocktail party, you are doing mental calculation, rather like filling in a crossword puzzle….as quickly as you can so as not to be stupid…if you can’t join in the conversation, of everyone going around, you get isolated, you become invisible, they talk past you.”
If you have hearing loss, stay visible and help yourself focus on your successes and not your losses by using appropriate amplification and by engaging in clEAR auditory brain training.

A. Reed et al., 2018), which presents powerful factoids that you can share to motivate this person to seek treatment. In a study spanning 10 years, the researchers found the following to be true of older adults with untreated hearing loss, as compared to peers with normal hearing:
• They incurred 46% higher healthcare costs ($22,434 per person over the ten years)
• They were 50% more likely to have a hospital stay and 44% more likely to be readmitted within 30 days
• They were 17% more likely to visit an emergency room
• They were 40% more likely to have depression
Although it is unclear how much improvement would have occurred had this group received hearing healthcare treatment, the authors suggest that because conversations are difficult for them, they might be less likely to pursue medical care and less likely to experience successful conversations with their doctors when they do.

As promised, I'm posting speechreading tips, starting last week and for the next few weeks. Here's speechreading tip number 2:<br />
<br />
2. Make ambient lighting work for you and not against you. For example, if you are sitting at an outdoor coffee shop, choose a chair at the table where you are not looking into the morning sun. Direct sunlight in your eyes will compromise your speechreading performance. Moreover, the sunlight streaming around your partner’s head will cast shadows on the person’s face and further hamper your speechreading. At restaurants, sit by a window in the day and near a light source in the evening. (continues) If you have a hearing loss and like to eat out at restaurants.<br />

This post is for those of you who have hearing loss and rely on lipreading to understand speech.<br />
<br />
This week, I'm going to share with my blog the first of five "speechreading tips". I wrote them for my textbook that is coming out in December from Plural Press ("Foundations of Aural Rehabilitation, 5th Ed"). I will post a speechreading tip each week until all five appear. By spacing them out, you'll be able to focus on one at a time. Try to be mindful of implementing this first one over the course of the coming week.<br />
<br />
Speechreading Tip #1: Watch the face. This seems obvious, but you can be distracted by other events in the room or by a handheld device. If you feel a little self-conscious and think that your conversational partner wonders why you never look away (e.g., Do I have jam on my cheek?), explain your speechreading strategy in a concise way (e.g., It helps me to look at your face because I rely on reading lips to understand words). By saying this, you also provide implicit and subtle instruction: You are saying without actually saying, "Make sure I can see you when you speak."<br />

As one of clEAR’s in-house audiologists, this is one of the most frequent questions I receive from users who receive auditory brain training. Here are some of my responses:</div>
<div class="mentions-texteditor__content" style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.9); font-family: -apple-system, system-ui, system-ui, "Segoe UI", Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", "Fira Sans", Ubuntu, Oxygen, "Oxygen Sans", Cantarell, "Droid Sans", "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol", "Lucida Grande", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
• If your spouse or partner is saying that you need to put on your hearing aids, you probably need to wear them more often than you do. Your spouse probably recognizes that you engage in small talk much more easily and successfully when you wear your aids. </div>
<div class="mentions-texteditor__content" style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.9); font-family: -apple-system, system-ui, system-ui, "Segoe UI", Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", "Fira Sans", Ubuntu, Oxygen, "Oxygen Sans", Cantarell, "Droid Sans", "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol", "Lucida Grande", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
• If you feel exhausted in the late afternoon or early evening, you might need to take a “time-out” from wearing your hearing aids and give your ears and your brain a rest. Find a quiet place, take a few deep breaths, and relax. Listening with hearing loss is sometimes a lot of work.</div>
<div class="mentions-texteditor__content" style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.9); font-family: -apple-system, system-ui, system-ui, "Segoe UI", Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", "Fira Sans", Ubuntu, Oxygen, "Oxygen Sans", Cantarell, "Droid Sans", "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol", "Lucida Grande", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
• If you need more motivation to wear your hearing aids, think of your brain health. Research shows that if the auditory region of your brain is not stimulated, it begins to lose “gray matter” and that its functionality begins to fade. This decline in turn can adversely affect other parts of your brain. Just like the muscles in your body need exercise, so too does your brain need auditory stimulation.</div>
<div class="mentions-texteditor__content" style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.9); font-family: -apple-system, system-ui, system-ui, "Segoe UI", Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", "Fira Sans", Ubuntu, Oxygen, "Oxygen Sans", Cantarell, "Droid Sans", "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol", "Lucida Grande", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.6rem; line-height: 1.5; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

Hot off the press (Wei et al., 2017), this

According to Pichora-Fuller et al. (2016), listeners with hearing loss "expend more mental effort to direct attention to and concentrate on... comprehending, remembering, and responding to [speech]…." And as a result, "they may experience fatigue and/or decide to quit the task at hand to avoid becoming fatigued."
To counteract hearing-related cognitive fatigue:
• “Chill out” with quiet time every day at about the same time of day, limiting verbal input, even reading, for about 20 minutes.
• If warranted, use appropriately fitted hearing aids, ideally with noise reduction circuitry.
• Engage in auditory brain training (e.g., Sommers et al., 2015).

Participants: 81,818 women
Study Design: A longitudinal cohort study from 1991-2013
Diet types studied: 1) Alternative Mediterranean Diet (AMED); 2) Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH); and 3) Alternative Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010)
Findings: The more closely a woman followed the AMED, the less likely she was to incur a hearing loss; in fact, her risk factor decreased by 30%.
Conclusions: Enjoy the following---vegetables (except potatoes, sigh), fruits, nuts, legumes, whole grains, extra virgin olive oil, fish, and vino (!!—in moderation, of course).
If you know a woman who hasn’t followed the AMED and may now have hearing loss, there’s help available.</span><br />

<h2>
Here are a few facts about Veterans and hearing loss:</h2>
<br />
<ul>
<li>Over one million veterans receive compensation for hearing loss.</li>
<li>The most common kind of hearing loss among veterans is noise-induced hearing loss, resulting from exposure to explosives or engine noise. Veterans with this kind of hearing loss have a hard time hearing when there is background noise present, as in a noisy restaurant.</li>
<li>Even if they score normally on a hearing test, many veterans experience difficulty understanding speech, a condition called "central auditory processing disorder."</li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
<h3>
clEAR has a customized lesson plan that provides auditory brain training specifically designed to enhance listening in noise and another plan that is specifically designed for those who suffer from central auditory processing disorder.</h3>

<br />
What the research shows about auditory brain training:<br />
•<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Improves speech discrimination (JSLHR, 2016; 2017)<br />
•<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Reduces perceptual effort (Semin Hear, 2015)<br />
•<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Diminishes everyday listening challenges (JSLHR, 2016)<br />
•<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Increases confidence for engaging in conversations (JSLHR, 2017; JAAA, 2012)<br />
Much attention has been paid to the Johns Hopkins study that showed untreated hearing loss can hasten age-related cognitive decline (J. Gerontol A Biol Sci Med Sci, 2011). Consequently, many patients are receptive to the notion of “exercising” their listening skills and cognitive auditory abilities. Auditory brain training can be a key component in a comprehensive hearing healthcare plan, especially given the public’s growing awareness of the link between hearing treatment and good cognitive health.<br />

Research tells us that patients benefit from and enjoy participating in auditory training programs. clEAR is an auditory brain training program that aims to teach the brain to recognize and process the important speech sounds that you want to hear, even when there is competing noise. Here are just a few of our patients' endorsements after training with clEAR:<br />
<br />
<br />
* “I went to a wedding and was surprised at how well I heard even though the hall was noisy. The clEAR auditory training has really helped me.”<br />
An experienced hearing aid user.<br />
* “Thanks to clEAR, I don’t give up like I used to when I couldn’t understand someone. Now, I hang in there and pay attention and usually do really well.”<br />
Someone who isn’t ready for hearing aids.<br />
* “My son loves playing the clEAR games!”<br />
Mother of a teenager who has hearing loss.<br />

<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 22px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Surprisingly, they are not. Hearing allows you to receive acoustic information (speech) while listening requires your brain to attend to and interpret speech. For example, once a speech signal enters your ear, your brain must rapidly process each word and hold that string of words in memory long enough to comprehend and make sense of its meaning. Not only must your brain distinguish each word from all other possible words, but it must invoke mental skills such as auditory memory, auditory attention, and auditory processing speech in order for you to engage successfully in conversation.</div>

Auditory training not only develops one’s listening skills, but also, auditory training often instills a sense of self-efficacy and confidence in the person who has hearing loss. This is why clEAR auditory brain training is game-based and allows subscribers to experience about an 80% success rate as they play. Here are comments from two clEAR users:</div>

A highlight at the American Academy of Audiology this week in Nashville TN will be an exhibit by the clEAR team at Booth 1604. We will be sharing our brand new auditory brain training start-up kit with the over 5000 audiologists who will be in attendance. The kit includes:<br />
* The introductory postcard, which patients will receive on their first visit to an audiologist, explaining the three stages of the hearing healthcare journey (i.e., diagnostics, hearing aids, listening therapy).<br />
* The "What is auditory brain training" brochure, which explains the critical importance of listening therapy for the new hearing aid user or for the patient who isn't yet ready for hearing aids.<br />
* The "Getting Started" sheet, which walks patients through the simple steps of getting started with clEAR auditory training.<br />

Please write to your senators and urge them to support the Audiology Patient Choice Act. This legislation would allow Medicare to cover audiologists' services to seniors, including the full range of hearing and balance interventions (including auditory training). Most adults over the age of 60 years have age-related hearing loss but most do not receive adequate hearing healthcare. If you haven’t contacted your senators before, it’s easy to do. Simply google “Contact [senator’s name]” and you’ll be taken to a page where you can enter a message. Here’s a suggested message:<br />

The Audiology Patient Choice Act, a bipartisan bill that was introduced by US Senators Elizabeth Warrant (D-Mass) and Rand Paul (R-KY) to the Senate on March 20, 2018. This bill would allow audiologists to bill Medicare for auditory rehabilitation services and would help the many senior citizens who are not receiving adequate hearing healthcare. Thank you.<br />

The more letters that senators receive, the more likely that this important bill will pass. <span style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.75); font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">For part of each week, I work in a building that houses start-up companies. Recently, a middle-aged friend approached me in the communal lunchroom. “You’ve got to see it,” he exclaimed, “I shelled out big bucks for this beauty, but it does everything! Music, telephone, and best of all, I’m hearing the engine hum---something I haven’t heard in years!”
“You just bought a Maserati,” I guessed.
“Nope,” he said, proudly pointing to his ear, “A hearing aid.”
Turns out the engine hum he was talking about was coming from his refrigerator, not a V-8 engine.
That’s when it hit me: Hearing loss is losing its social stigma.
Baby Boomers are changing the way that society perceives hearing loss. Whereas their parents, as senior citizens, tended to be resistant to technology and tended to be overly resistant to spending money on themselves, this new generation of seniors is embracing digital technology and the latest developments in hearing technology. Many are not allowing hearing loss to prevent them from leading an otherwise active and youthful lifestyle.
It’s a great time to be a healthcare professional. Try clEAR auditory brain training---you’ll be amazed by how it enhances your everyday conversations.<a href="http://www.clearworks4ears.com/">EARS train the brain</a></span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17506633325849915330noreply@blogger.com1
